"Micro-trenching offers a low impact on infrastructure, less disruption to the community, less risk of hitting other utilities, flexible deployment, and is easy to repair and maintain."

Micro-trenching

This page explains the micro-trenching services available from Sharp Concrete Cutters and Drillers Limited, and has photos and video of the micro-trenching machine at work.

Sharp Concrete Cutters and Drillers Ltd has joined forces with TeraSpan to assist in the deployment of fibre optic cable using micro-trenching, by investing in the latest industrial cutting machinery.

The manufacturer's agency in New Zealand (Youngman and Richardson) has designed and modified the micro-trench saw to a dry up-cut system. This system can cut a 13mm wide x 230mm deep cut through asphalt and base course, or concrete and base course, to leave a clean dry cut ready for the installation of the Teraspan product. The dust is collected in a dust extraction vacuum system and taken away. We also have a ditch witch for soft soil applications. This system has been proven by Teraspan who have used this dry up-cut application in many countries around the world and our own trials undertaken here have proven the concept also. See our two videos below.

TeraSpan's innovative Vertical Inlaid Fiber (VIF) system changes the way fiber optic networks are deployed - reducing costs, maximising versatility, and minimising environmental impact while rapidly improving time to market for new services. TeraSpan provides a complete micro-trenched fiber optic solution for Outside Plant applications that is fully scalable to meet present and future fiber optic network requirements. The TeraSpan solution has already been widely adopted in larger markets like the USA, Canada, Europe, and as climatically diverse as Norway and Saudi Arabia.

TeraSpan’s VIF system is the world's leading solution for versatile, reliable, cost effective and environmentally friendly fibre optic network deployments. It is highly effective in urban and "last mile" deployments or areas with a predominance of rock, or where normal trenching is difficult. Based on micro-trenching fibre optic cables in TeraSpan's Vertical Deflecting Conduit (VDC) in the top 30cm of a concrete, asphalt or "soft" boulevard infrastructure, VIF drastically reduces the cost, time and complexity of fibre optic deployment. Fibre optic cables are zipped, pulled or blown inside a rugged two-piece conduit which provides 2,000lbs/linear inch protection against frost and compression damage.

Trial 1: Sharp Concrete Cutters & Drillers Ltd have undertaken a small micro trenching trial in New Zealand. We have bought and modified this saw to cut a dry upcut slot of 13mm wide x 230mm deep, for the installation of Teraspans' vertical inlaid fibre. After 3 months of milk tankers, tractors and other vehicles running over the slot, there has been no side wall failure at all. View the video below on YouTube.

Trial 2: View the video below on YouTube of the second trial of the microtrenching machine owned by Sharp Concrete Cutters & Drillers Ltd. It performed better than expected and everyone is happy with the results. Microtrenching cuts a 13mm wide x 230mm deep cut through asphalt and base course for laying fibre optic cable. It is a dry-cut system where the dust is collected in a dust extraction vacuum system and taken away for disposal.
